Surgeon General receives briefing on the National Physical
Activity Plan
January 29, 2010
The National Physical Activity Plan continues to build
momentum and garner attention from national leadership in
Public Health. On January 26th, Russell Pate (left), Chair
of the NPAP Coordinating Committee from the University of
South Carolina, and Jim Whitehead (right), NPAP Coordinating
Committee member from the American College of Sports
Medicine, met with the new U.S. Surgeon General, Regina
Benjamin (center), M.D., M.B.A., to brief her on the NPAP.
Dr. Benjamin expressed her appreciation for the Coordinating
Committee’s work on the Plan.
Dr. Benjamin received her MD degree from the
University of Alabama, Birmingham; her MBA from Tulane
University, and holds five Honorary Doctorates. She is
Founder and Former CEO of the Bayou La Batre Rural Health
Clinic in Alabama, past President of the Medical Association
State of Alabama, and immediate Past Chair of the Federation
of State Medical Boards of the United States. Dr. Benjamin
is a member of the National Academy of Science’s Institute
of Medicine, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family
Physicians. Among her many acknowledgements, Dr. Benjamin
was the recipient of the 1998 Nelson Mandela Award for
Health and Human Rights and the 2000 National Caring Award.
Launch for National
Physical Activity Plan set for May 3, 2010 in Washington, DC
January 22, 2010
On May 3, 2010, the National Physical Activity Plan will
kick off with launch events in Washington, DC, and across
the country. Launch events will include a news conference
for national media to be held at the National Press Club in
Washington, DC, congressional meetings, and local launch
events across the US. Check back soon for more launch
information as it becomes available.
NAHF Annual Meeting
to feature National Plan panel in April
JANUARY 12, 2010
The National Association for Health and Fitness, the Network
of State Governors’ Councils and Coalitions, Annual Meeting
will feature a National Plan panel facilitated by NAHF Board
Member Jim Whitehead of ACSM. NAHF members including Diane
Hart, Bert Knitter and others will discuss NAHF’s role in
implementing the plan and opportunities with-in the National
Plan’s eight areas of focus. Registration information for

RRCA promotes
National Physical Activity Plan, encourages advocacy

The upcoming Fall/Winter 2009 edition of Club Running, a
magazine produced by the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA),
promotes the involvement of the RRCA in the National
Physical Activity Plan and encourages its members to
participate in advocacy efforts in their area. In the
“Executive Director’s Note,” Jean Knaack, Executive Director
of the RRCA writes, “The RRCA looks forward to working with
other organizations on the development of the National
Physical Activity Plan, and we hope you’ll join us in our
effort to get America moving!” The Fall/Winter 2009 edition
of Club Running will be released on January 19 and will be
available on the RRCA’s website,
www.rrca.org.
JPAH releases National Physical Activity Plan supplement

The
Journal of Physical Activity and Health (JPAH) has issued a special supplement specific to the U.S. National Physical Activity Plan. Available now on the
JPAH Web site, the supplement contains white papers from each of the eight societal sectors addressed by the plan as well as a review of national physical activity plans from around the world.
National Academy of Sports Medicine joins National Physical Activity Plan

The National
Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) announced its commitment
to increasing physical activity in the United States by
becoming an Organizational Partner in the effort to develop
a National Physical Activity Plan. “NASM is pleased to join NPAP and its organizational partners in creating an
executable plan for promoting physical activity,” said Dr.
Michael Clark, NASM chief executive officer. “In a time when
Americans sit more and move less, such a plan is needed to
combat the contributors of chronic disease.”
Since 1987, NASM has been a leader in providing
evidence-based education, certifications and advanced
credentials to health and fitness professionals world-wide.
The NASM educational continuum is designed to help today’s
health and fitness professional enhance their career while
empowering their clients to live healthier lives.
Russell Pate, Chair of the National Plan’s Coordinating
Committee, said, “I am very excited to welcome NASM to our
exceptional group of Organizational Partners. The NASM will
offer unique insight that I know will strengthen the NPAP
and thereby benefit the health and fitness of all
Americans.”

American Public Health Association Meeting to feature National Physical Activity Plan
October 29, 2009
The American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting and
Exposition, the premier Public Health Education Forum, will
be featuring a presentation on the effort to develop and
implement a National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP) for the
U.S.
Scheduled for November 7 – 11, 2009 in Philadelphia, the
presentation will include addresses from Colleen Doyle, NPAP
Coordinating Committee member representing the American
Cancer Society, Jim Whitehead, NPAP Coordinating Committee
member from the American College of Sports Medicine, Jimmy
Newkirk, Chair of the NPAP Public Health Working Group from
the North Carolina Division of Public Health Physical
Activity and Nutrition Branch, and Russell Pate, Chair of
the NPAP Coordinating Committee from the University of South
Carolina Prevention Research Center.
The presentation scheduled for Monday, November 9th at 10:30
am will include topics such as: the process of developing
and launching the NPAP, the process of implementing the NPAP,
the role of non-profits in developing and implementing the NPAP, and
implications of the NPAP for state and local

American Medical Association joins National Physical Activity Plan

The American
Medical Association (AMA) has become an
Organizational
Partner in the effort to develop a National Physical
Activity Plan. Russell Pate, Chair of the National Plan’s
Coordinating Committee, said, “I am thrilled that the AMA
has chosen to put its considerable influence and prestige
behind the National Physical Activity Plan. It is heartening
to know that the AMA’s 240,000 members are supporting The
Plan’s goal of increasing population levels of physical
activity.”
Founded in 1847 and headquartered in Chicago, the AMA is
involved in many advocacy efforts that include providing
doctors with effective programs and tools to help promote
healthy lifestyles in their patients. Through the actions of
its Board of Trustees and House of Delegates, the AMA sets
standards for the medical profession. The AMA has had 162
years of success at promoting the art and science of
medicine and the betterment of public health.

Coordinating Committee set to meet in Washington, DC
October 13, 2009
The process of developing the first U.S. National Physical Activity Plan is
moving ahead rapidly. Working Groups,
representing eight societal
sectors are completing the finalized Recommendations for
submission to the National Plan’s Coordinating Committee.
The Coordinating Committee will
meet in Washington, DC on October 27 and 28, 2009 to review
the Working Group Recommendations and other relevant
materials. It is anticipated that the first draft of the
National Plan will be composed once the Strategies have been
determined at the meeting.

Road Runners Club of America commits to help develop National Physical Activity Plan

The Road Runners
Club of America (RRCA), an organization with a long history
of promoting physical activity, has joined The National
Physical Activity Plan as an Organizational Partner. Russ Pate, Chair of the National Plan
Coordinating Committee said “The RRCA is positioned to
provide exceptional leadership in developing The Plan and in
implementing it in communities across the nation.” Founded in
1958, the RRCA is the national association of running clubs,
running events, and runners dedicated to promoting running
as healthy exercise, a positive social network, and as a
competitive sport. The RRCA achieves their mission by
promoting the common interests of its members by providing
educational opportunities, programs, and services. The
organization’s membership consists of over 1035 running
clubs and events around the United States. Over 200,000
runners and walkers nationwide belong to RRCA running clubs.
RRCA running clubs and events host thousands of races
annually that attract millions of runners nationwide.
